The Mono Sen South Asian Community Collection Finding Aid contains information about newspaper coverage documenting the South Asian experience in Hudson County and nationwide from 1977-1998. It was collected by community advocate Mono Sen.

About Mono Sen

Monoranjan 'Mono' Sen was passionate about the local community and South Asian culture, evidenced by his community involvement and activism throughout the years. He settled in Jersey City after coming to the U.S. in 1970. Sen was a trained economist who was a member of the Indian Economic Service prior to immigrating to the U.S.

Sen held  various positions in Jersey City government including Census Advisor to Mayor Thomas Smith, Commissioner of Senior Affairs under Mayor Gerald McCann, and honorary deputy mayor under Mayor Bret Schundler. Sen also worked actively on behalf of the Bengali cultural organization and the Federation of Indian Associations in New York and New Jersey. He is the founder of the Indo-American Forum in U.S.A. 

In 2000, Jersey City acknowledged Sen's contribution to the community by naming the area of Liberty Avenue between Newark and Van Winkle avenues Mono Sen Plaza. Sen received the New Jersey governor's award for excellence in human rights activities and in 2007 he was recognized by the New York City Council for "distinguished service to the city of New York." 

Mono Sen passed away in June 2014 at the age of 89.
